Dark chocolate is usually known for its “bitter taste” and crunchy feel. Made from the seed of the cocoa tree, it’s one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet. Chocolate is the ultimate comfort food, a sure stand by in times of stress and a reliable source of consolation when life has let us down.

But dark chocolate is more than just a guilty pleasure; it actually comes with many health benefits. Real dark chocolate (not the processed and sweetened milk chocolate) is packed full with incredible health benefits, which are as follows:

It’s good for the heart and circulation
This chocolate helps restore flexibility to arteries while also preventing white blood cells from sticking to the walls of blood vessels which are both common causes of artery clogging.

It’s good for your skin
The flavonols in dark chocolate can protect the skin against sun damage (though you’d probably better still apply on some sun cream).

It may prevent diabetes
It sounds mad, but cocoa has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. So dark chocolate when taken in moderation might delay or prevent the onset of diabetes.

It’s good for mothers and babies
Chocolate can be used to reduce stress in expectant mothers and the babies of such mothers tend to smile more often than the offsprings of non chocolate eating parents.

Chocolate is good for the brain
Flavanols found in chocolate are thought to reduce memory loss in older people and the anti-inflammatory qualities of dark chocolate have been found beneficial in treating brain injuries such as concussion.
